Sometimes when I think about men and women, I think...

peterwknox:

Sometimes when I think about men and women, I think about the respective powers that come with being of both genders. And I am of the (mostly likely unpopular) opinion that, all things being equal, a woman can go get laid far more easily than a man.

I remember reading somewhere once that women have sex and men have to get it from them. This isn’t to say women aren’t horny, don’t want to have sex, or necessarily need to be seduced into sex, but that if they want it, women can more safely initiate sex whenever and wherever they please - men are ready to go.

I propose that a woman grabbing a man’s crotch would serve as an appropriate gesture in initiating sex. The woman might not even know the man all that well, but it’s rather difficult to misinterpret such a move.

Lying in bed and want another go-round? Reach over, if you’re a woman, and even if you wake him up, you’re having sex. Want to leave the bar and not be subtle about it? Make your intentions clear.

Now, reverse that. If she’s not thinking about sex, rolling over and grabbing her in bed might not lead to where you want to go. Approach a woman in a bar, grabbing her will not help you get laid. Whereas, if a woman wants to get laid, she either has a list of men she can look up at any hour of the night or pluck one off the street, men have a much longer and formidable dance to perform for the same result.

Hit by a Car

jamesacklin:

I was hit by a car last night on Second Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. I was riding on the street and through an intersection where there was a car preparing to make a left-hand turn. He slowed down and put his turn signal on, and assuming that he saw me, my bike, and the numerous flashing lights on my bike, I continued through the intersection, assuming the right of way. He turned into me, striking me on my left side. I flew over the hood and landed on the sidewalk on my right side. My bike was tossed at least 50 feet in the other direction.

I have five staples in my left knee and the doctors think my right ankle might or might not have a hairline fracture in it. Regardless, I’m in a brace and on crutches for at least a month until everything heals up.

The police report has me riding on the sidewalk and accelerating in front of the turning car. This is absolutely incorrect. I was on the road, acting in a perfectly legal manner, obeying and assuming Pennsylvania state road laws. I was in complete control of my bicycle at all times up until the crash.

The most important thing here is not to be beaten by this, but only to continue to ride (after my injuries heal, obviously). The more cyclists that drivers see on the street, the more they will look for them (especially in a particularly self-obsessed town like Pittsburgh).

Stay up.

The recent events in my life have compelled me to look at a much BIGGER picture. A perspective that I thought could only be viewed when you take yourself out of the equation. When I was looking for this “big picture”, it was almost like I came back full circle and drew this conclusion.

This past century was breathless, spectacular, and filled with relentless innovation. It was immensely impactful in the sense of where we are going as a nation, and a race as a whole. But forget the radio, iPod, internet or the polio vaccine. The true triumph and achievement of the century was the invention of a whole new way of being - a new imperative of self.

It is an incredible feeling to realize that you are not suppose to be anything or anyone. Anyone but you. You can be a pot-head, business man, gamer, beach bum, spiritualist or hipster. You can be whoever you want to be or no one at all.

So go and express yourself. Be true to yourself. Enjoy yourself. Treat yourself. Find yourself. Spoil yourself. Distinguish yourself. Love yourself. Get some self-esteem. Some self-worth. A positive self image. Achieve self awareness. Be self sufficient and do some self improvement.

Go into the huge universe of the self. Measure it out in ME time. Whether it’s new shoes, Myspace or your blog, just be you.

Welcome to individuality. Population: You.

Well said. People seem to get caught up attempting to measure up to implied expectations when they should be enjoying all there is.

Drinking/Running

jakehurwitz:

Since June 8th I’ve been running around fifteen or more miles a week. During this time I’ve dramatically cut down on my drinking, going from drinking four times a week to just twice in the last two months. Surprisingly, it’s been much, much easier than I thought it would be. I was talking to my friends Christine and Brandy last night and I think I came to a pseudo conclusion as to why I’ve gotten so into running so easily.

It’s a lot like drinking.

At least right now. You see, I haven’t grown to love the long runs where my calves burn and my head and neck feel heavy- I think I will, but it’s gonna take time. What does motivate me, is the euphoric feeling I get when I reach the door to my apartment after a hard run. And in a way, going on a run is like taking a shot.

Before you take a shot, you are aware it won’t be easy. You have a sinking feeling in your stomach that you may not be able to do it, but you know you’ll feel like a pussy if you don’t, so you go for it. The beginning is the worst. Everything starts to sting, and you wonder why you’re even doing it in the first place. Just as you feel like you want to give up though, you hit the middle of the shot, and you realize it’s not so bad, you’re halfway there. You can do this. But then, the end is almost as hard as the beginning, you start to think “God, is this a regulation shot? This is lasting longer than I anticipated.” You want to slow down, you want to stop early, but you’re motivated by having the bottom of the glass in sight, so you give it one final push. You’re done.

The feeling now, even though it’s leaving a terrible taste in your mouth, your stomach hurts and your throat burns. You have that feeling of accomplishment, you’re working towards a goal of getting fucked up. And you’ve just taken a giant step in the right direction. You feel dizzy, a little sick, but you feel good. Proud.

And that’s how I feel after I run. I’m pumped that my will power and determination is going into something that’s not actually hurting my body and driving me to text my entire contact list at 3 AM. I almost just ended this by typing, “I hope I can keep this up.” But that would have been stupid, I know I can.
